A lifelong resident of Sussex County, Hal Wirths became an assemblyman in January 2018, and budget officer in 2020.

Wirths was the Labor commissioner from 2010 to 2016, reforming the department and returning the Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund to solvency. Under his leadership, the department implemented aggressive fraud-fighting efforts, saving taxpayers over $800 million.

Previously, he was a Sussex County freeholder from 2000 to 2010. He owned and managed furniture stores for nearly 20 years, and was a founder of Noble Community Bank, now part of Lakeland Bank.

He resides in Hardyston with his wife and has two adult daughters.
