Recent state budgets have been characterized by excessive spending, stagnant funding for our schools and higher taxes. Assembly Republicans are offering an alternative to the continuation of these flawed policies in this year’s budget. Republican lawmakers have submitted a proposal to cut just over $1.5 billion in unnecessary or wasteful spending along with two resolutions calling for $1 billion to be dedicated to a property tax relief program and $300 million to be distributed to all school districts, except Abbott districts, based on enrollment numbers.

Realizing that true, lasting tax relief can only be achieved through fiscal responsibility, Assembly Republicans have identified $1.5 billion in wasteful
or unnecessary spending that can be cut from this budget. These savings are being achieved through streamlining state government, consolidating departments, eliminating political patronage jobs, cutting waste and putting an end to unfair, politically motivated pork distributions. The money will be directed to enhanced property tax relief and
school aid.
