Assemblyman Michael J. Doherty was born on May 24, 1963 in Point Pleasant. He attended public schools in Glen Ridge and is a 1985 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. Assemblyman Doherty served in the United States Army from 1985 to 1989, and the U.S. Army Reserves, where he rose to the rank of Captain, from 1989 to 1993.
The assemblyman graduated from Seton Hall Law School in 1993, the same year as his admission to the bar. Currently, he is a patent attorney with the law firm of Lerner, David, Littenberg, Krumholz and Mentlik, in Westfield.
As a representative of the 23rd Legislative District, Assemblyman Doherty serves on the Labor Committee.
Assemblyman Doherty and his wife Linda have three sons, Matthew, Ryan and Jared.
