Assemblyman Alex DeCroce was chosen by his colleagues to serve as Republican Leader in November 2003 and again in 2005. As leader he has made ethical standards, fiscal integrity and property tax reform as the top priorities of the caucus.
A member of the New Jersey General Assembly since January 26, 1989, when he was chosen to fill a vacancy, Mr. DeCroce was subsequently elected to the office nine times. During his tenure, he has served in a variety of leadership positions, including Majority Leader, Deputy Speaker and Conference Leader.
Among his many legislative accomplishments is the renewal of the Transportation Trust Fund, the dedication of the motor fuels tax for transportation projects, a constitutional amendment to protect and strengthen the rights of crime victims, health coverage for prostate cancer tests and support for organ transplant efforts.
Mr. DeCroce was chairman of the Assembly Transportation Committee from 1992 to 2001 and was honored for his leadership and success in shepherding legislation to improve New Jersey’s transportation system by the Utility and Transportation Contractors Association, which named him Transportation Advocate of the Decade in 2002. The same year, he was the recipient of the Transportation Achievement Award from the Institute of Transportation Engineers and the Citizen Service Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers.
In 1996, Assemblyman DeCroce became the first recipient of the South Jersey Alliance for Action’s Walter Rand Award. He was chosen “Outstanding Legislator” by the New Jersey Association of Counties in 2000 and received the prestigious Eagle Award from the New Jersey Alliance for Action in 1997. International recognition came in 1998 from the Association of Commuter Transportation in San Francisco for his contributions to the field of transportation demand management.
Assemblyman DeCroce has an extensive record of public service. In 1984, he became a member of the Morris County Board of Freeholders, a position he held until 1989. He served as Freeholder Director in 1986. He is a former member of the Morris County Board of Elections and Board of Taxation. He also is a former chairman of the Board of Trustees of Morris County College. Long active in politics, he served two years as chairman of the Morris County Republican Committee.
He represents the 26th Legislative District, which includes Butler, Chatham Borough, East Hanover, Florham Park, Hanover, Kinnelon, Lincoln Park, Montville, Morris Plains, Parsippany-Troy Hills, Pequannock and Riverdale in Morris County and Bloomingdale, Pompton Lakes and West Milford in Passaic County.
Mr. DeCroce is president of the Morris Plains real estate firm of Gallo & DeCroce, Inc. A lifelong Morris County resident, he is married to the former Betty Lou Bisson. They have three grown children and a grandson.
