April 12, 2012
Assembly Republican Whip Scott Rumana, R-Passaic, Bergen, Essex and Morris, said he was encouraged by the efforts of the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to address the chronic flooding issues related to the Passaic River which were detailed in a report issued today. Rumana is a member of the Passaic River Basin Flood Advisory Commission that recommended a 15-point plan to alleviate the impacts of flooding in Feb. 2011.
At a meeting today in Lincoln Park, DEP Commissioner Bob Martin announced that residential properties in 540 North Jersey communities were approved for buyouts by the Federal Emergency Management Agency totaling $121 million. Commissioner Martin also discussed the findings of a leading engineering consultant firm that examined the causes and impacts of four recent flood events. Among its findings, the firm determined the operation of the Pompton Lake Dam’s flood gates is not increasing downstream flooding in the central part of the river basin.
