Led by DeCroce & Simon, women members of NJ Legislature surge

New Jersey can now boast the 10th-highest percentage of women in the state Legislature in the 50 states — behind Connecticut and ahead of Maine.

The increase — up from 43rd in 2004 — is helped by the addition of three Assembly members since January— two of whom were appointed as temporary replacements for men who died.

BettyLou DeCroce (R-Morris) replaced her late husband, Alex, and Donna Simon (R-Hunterdon) is filling in for Peter Biondi, who died two days after being re-elected. The third is Gabriela Mosquera (D-Gloucester), whose victory was overturned by the state Supreme Court, but who was appointed to fill the seat temporarily by her district’s Democratic committee.
