Abortion protesters held an hour long rally in front of the Statehouse Monday to mark the anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision, with several speakers calling for New Jersey to institute parental notification when a minor tries to get an abortion.
Legislation from Republicans calls for a constitutional amendment on parental notification, but it hasn’t gained traction with majority Democrats.
Lawmakers who spoke included state Sens. Steven Oroho and Michael Doherty and Assemblymen Erik Peterson, Anthony M. Bucco and Michael Patrick Carroll, all Republicans.
Christie was the first New Jersey governor to endorse the Right to Life group’s positions. Carroll praised Christie for that stance and for other conservative positions, even with the governor remaining out of view.
“I hope he hears me complimenting him,” said Carroll, drawing laughs from the crowd.
